Family run Organic Farm located on the South Downs

The Family came to the Manor Farm in 1962 and was run as a traditional mixed dairy and arable enterprise. It is around 475 acres situated mainly on the East side of the 286 and extends for about 2 miles eastwards along the Southdown Way.

In 2004 reviewing the business and economics in agriculture the dairy herd was sold and we began hanging the farm to a beef suckler herd and opted to use the Sussex breed. They are renowned for their docile temperament and seemed a good choice for rearing on the Downs.

In light of the Environmental projects we have on the Farm and the extensive nature of rearing the cattle we took the decision to convert to organic farming. The land and cattle completed the two year conversion period December 2007, and we now have our Certificate of Compliance through Organic Farmers & Growers.

As part of the on going environmental management we introduced a flock of sheep September 2006 which were bred to Suffolk and Hampshire Down rams to develop a sustainable downland flock.

Our addition during 2007 was the Oxford Sandy & Black pigs to establish our pedigree herd. As hoped they are producing a quality pork as well as being natural weeders and ploughers!

Our first venture into the show ring at Weald & Downland Open Air Museum’s Rare Breed Show, was most successful as we were awarded Best of Breed.

The pigs and sheep, being introduced to the Farm after we had started our Organic Conversion will become ‘organic’ later in the year.

The Farm Shop is now open for our meat in the old dairy building, and we will continue to develop this, expanding what we can offer and our opening times.
